House Cooling

House Cooling - Passive

House cooling is a comfort which is difficult to ignore. We can dress up to fill warmer but we cannot undress more to get cooler. Insulation in the ceiling, walls, floors is a good passive house cooling. A good house design with proper insulation can provide a needed comfort.

However, in many cases mechanical/active cooling is still needed. Thus, energy efficient homes with great home design plans may not be enough.

House Cooling - Mechanical

Fans are the cheapest mechanical house coolers with the smallest impact on green gases. Fans cost very little to buy and to run. However we know that fans do not provide that much house cooling . This is especially true for larger homes.

Nevertheless, for city apartments and small apartments for rent the fans can be sufficient. Some holiday houses, beach houses and small rental houses successfully rely on fan technology.

House Cooling - Evaporative

Evaporative coolers are really the second choice of house cooling for energy efficient homes. It is a combination of a fan and a cool air produced from evaporation. Evaporative coolers are very efficient and provide sound comfort.

Home designs in Australia make provisions for evaporative coolers because of their popularity. Evaporative coolers provide cool air which is healthy. In case of air conditioning system the doors need to be closed.

However, evaporative coolers need the doors to be open so air is let out and not circulated. Modern evaporative coolers in new homes efficiently circulate water.

Thus energy efficient homes with green home designs should consider this method of cooling. Evaporative coolers are not implemented in city apartments. Most apartments for rent use air condition because of building constraints.

However, technology may come when Sydney apartments, Perth apartments and apartments in Melbourne will adopt evaporative cooling for healthier and energy efficient city life.

House Cooling - Refrigerative

Evaporative coolers are great choice of house cooling in dry climates. In humid climates they do not work well. Air condition works well in any climate and provides comfort for larger spaces. However, refrigerative coolers require good insulation, closed windows and doors.

Same as refrigerators, air conditioners are expensive to run. The air from aircondition is dry and not very healthy. However, because of the exceptional and easy to regulate comfort, air conditioning systems are widely used for house cooling.

Also, minimal construction makes them popular in city apartments. Home interior design and home design plans can easily accommodate air condition for house cooling as these mechanical coolers are not large.
